| Nippon Steel's 08/09 CO2 emissions down by 15%
Nippon Steel Corp, the world's No.2 steelmaker, said that, with energy-saving measures, it had cut 15 percent of energy origin carbon dioxide emissions in 2008/2009 fiscal year that ended in March from 1990 level.
Nippon Steel had CO2 emissions totally 63.5 million tons in the 2008/09 financial year with 33 million tons of crude steel output, which was lower emissions it generated in 1998/99 with output of just 28 million tons.
A target of cutting emissions was original set by 9 percent over the five financial years to March 2013 to commit to the Kyoto Protocol. Nippon Steel said the opening of a state-of-the art coke plant in May 2008 and other smaller energy-saving measures helped cut emissions with additional 7 percent cut from 1990 levels.
